Spring Cleaning as a Wellness Practice

by Shelby Wood

As we welcome Spring’s more mild weather and longer days it’s time to think about the infamous Spring Cleaning! Whether you love it or hate it, it turns out there are some wellness benefits. The video below from Mayo Clinic News Network highlights some of these safety factors to consider as you prepare for your projects.

After a review of safety tips we might now consider the benefits of the Spring Clean. According to Dawn Potter, PsyD cleaning is good for several reasons:

“Cleaning produces a tangible result that we can both see and feel,” Dr. Potter says. (ClevelandClinic.org, 2022)

Potter continues noting that: cleaning helps you de-stress; you may feel more peaceful; it can help improve focus; allows for reduced hazards; encourages movement and helps fend off depression.  (ClevelandClinic.org, 2022)

I find spring cleaning more enjoyable when I do the following:

  • use cleaning products that I like the scent of – usually something Rose scented by Mrs. Meyers
  • listen to a Podcast, Audiobook (why not using your library card on Libbie?)  or music
  • focus on completing one task at a time
  • take breaks when needed

*These are anecdotal and work for me personally. While these may not work for you, I’d love you to comment below and let me know what helps make your spring cleaning more enjoyable.

Day of Service and Green Up Day

We’re back with Lyme’s Day of Service and Green Up Day! In 2020, we spread our Day of Service into  many “days” of service to help mitigate pandemic issues. In 2021, we organized outdoor service projects and road clean-up on the traditional first Saturday in May following Covid safety protocols. This year, we’re happy to announce that we are  back to a more traditional Day of Service and Green Up Day. This event is scheduled for Saturday, May 7th. We will feel the spirit of the Lyme Community! We are seeking to coordinate a community picnic lunch – more information to come.
