On July 4 at 7:00 p.m., New Hampshire Public Broadcasting stations will air a pre-recorded public reading of Douglass’s speech.
There are three readers from each participating New Hampshire community, each of whom will read one paragraph from the speech.
In choosing the three readers from our locality, we decided to focus on the wide diversity of our nation’s citizens at this time in history to help us hear Frederick’s words anew. All are active members in the Lebanon area and two are VIMS members. They are Bise Wood Saint Eugene, Lebanon; Subha Srinivasan, Lebanon; and Shideko Terai, Cornish.
This televised reading will also be available at later times: see the New Hampshire Public TV schedule for information: https://nhpbs.org/schedule/
We thank the volunteers and staff of The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, sponsors and organizers of the statewide readings in past years and again this year. They have been working hard with New Hampshire organizations and leaders and with New Hampshire PBS to keep this important commemoration of a piece of US history alive! This new format will bring Douglass’s message to an even larger number of people across our state.
