“Corn Crib Reading” to be held on the evening of Thursday, June 16th.

This will be a reading of my Lyme memoir that describes events from the 1960s to 1981. That was a time when my family and I owned the house sometimes referred to as the Green Tavern.  It is now owned by Jennifer Cooke. Some months ago, I read a chapter of the memoir to the Lyme Utility Club and this led to a request that I read some more of it to the public.

The reading will take place in the corn-crib from the Green Tavern. The corn crib was moved and is now located up the hill at my current home at 34 Lamphire Hill Lane. At 28 by 18 feet, it offers a space in which I propose to read my memoir surrounded by a structure that was important to us during those years.

Limited parking on the driveway can be expanded onto grass, if necessary. Bring a comfortable folding chair if you can.  The corn crib is a rustic building intended to dry corn, not to house listeners to a memoir reading. It lacks insect screens on the windows because all the exterior boards have wide openings for air exchange. During bug time in June you will probably find insect repellant a good idea. The floor is newly rebuilt but finished with the original planks from 1850+/-. There could be splinters, so don’t wear open toed shoes. There is a grass path of about 200 feet to the three steps that access the building. You may want a flashlight as you leave the building after the reading. The building lacks plumbing and bathrooms but has other features worth mentioning. One is a scar in the wood frame made by the discharge of a shot gun, probably by one of the Steele family who once owned it.  He lost his temper and shot whatever was eating his corn. Other corn crib features will be described.

Reading will begin at 7 and will go to no later than 8:30. I will read a couple of chapters of the memoir, and there will be time for questions and answers. Depending upon the reception and the mosquitoes there can/could be more such evenings.
